The Aspen City Council is making significant progress on major projects aimed at enhancing community infrastructure and sustainability.
Affordable Housing Developments
In April, the Council approved the Aspen Meadows housing project, which will provide 60 affordable housing units for hospital employees. This initiative is part of Aspen Valley Health’s plan to build 256 housing units over the next decade to address staff retention challenges.
Preserving Local Businesses
To support local businesses, the city is establishing the Aspen Area Community Trust, a nonprofit community land trust designed to keep commercial properties affordable. The city is currently seeking IRS approval for the trust’s nonprofit status.
Water Conservation Measures
In response to a particularly hot and dry winter, the Council enacted Stage 3 water restrictions in May. These measures limit outdoor irrigation to two days a week, aiming to conserve water resources during the ongoing drought.
Community Engagement
The Council encourages residents to participate in regular meetings held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 5 p.m. These sessions are accessible both in person at City Hall and online via the city’s YouTube channel.
